Hanoi's Old Quarter turns red as Tet nears

Colorful decorations with a dominant shade of red brighten Hanoi's downtown street.

As Tet approaches, Hang Ma Street in Hanoi's downtown Hoan Kiem District is bathed in the typical red color of the traditional Lunar New Year, the largest and most important in Vietnam.

The street is a popular place for Hanoi residents and tourists to buy Tet decorations every year, believing that beautiful home decorations will bring them luck and happiness.

With more than a month to go until Lunar New Year 2024, the "Tet excitement" on Hang Ma Street is already extremely festive.

These days, the street is filled with red lanterns, lucky money wrappers and more, signaling that Tet is just around the corner. Photo: Duy Khanh/The Hanoi Times

The shops on Hang Ma Street are awash in red with various decorations.

Visitors can see many red decorations such as phrases, envelopes, pictures, lanterns, plastic flowers, and other Tet items.

Traditional Vietnamese decorations such as banh chung (glutinous rice cakes) and parallel sentences are among the most sought-after items for the longest festival of the year.

A young girl in ao dai (Vietnam's traditional long dress) poses for photos on the colorful street to preserve her beautiful moments.

Foreign tourists donot miss Hang Ma Street these days to savor traditional Vietnamese Tet.
