European designer's silk outfit debuts at Hanoi festival

This year, Barbara Ebbli, founder of the Italian fashion brand Malaika, worked with the Hanoi Coordination Office to consult on designs using Vietnamese silk.

A collection of ten designs made of Hanoi's traditional silk and linen, designed by Barbara Ebbli, founder of the Italian fashion brand Malaika, will be presented at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Hanoi Agricultural Products and Craft Village Festival 2024 on November 29.

The event coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In a meeting with the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on November 26, Barbara Ebbli said she and the Malaika team would work with Hanoi's authorities to advise Vietnamese artisans on designing with Vietnamese silk.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve designs and enhance the value of Hanoi's handicrafts.

The department said the collection will be on display at the opening of the International Crafts Selling Exhibition - AF-L'Artigiano in Fiera 2024 - in Milan, Italy, scheduled for November 30. Vietnamese Hanhsilk JSC outfits and accessories will also be presented and sold at the Malaika design consultancy showroom on December 8.

At the meeting, Ta Van Tuong, Deputy Director of Hanoi's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, announced that the city will host an International Craft Village Festival in 2025 with the participation of Barbara Ebbli and her team, which aims to explore the potential of Hanoi’s OCOP (One Commune One Product) items and traditional handicrafts.

He said this cooperation will help access international markets for silk outfits and accessories in the coming years.

Earlier, at the 2023 AF-L'Artigiano held in Milan, Barbara visited the Hanoi-Vietnam booth and discussed with Hanoi companies about potential trade partnerships. She visited Hanoi on January 11-19, 2024 to conduct field research on silk production areas and facilities to gain insight into the silk production process. She also provided design ideas for fabric, silk and brocade fashions to several companies that own OCOP products in Hanoi.
